How to Avoid Stress and Anxiety during the Times of COVID-19

The majority of people hospitalized with coronavirus disease have at some point experienced symptoms of stress and anxiety. Quarantined individuals have psychiatric burdens due to discrimination, isolation, prejudice, and dismissal from work. Stress is the nonspecific response of the body to some demand. It is not identical to emotional arousal or nervous tension and furthermore, it is not something that can be easily avoided since just staying alive results in some demands for life-maintaining energy. In most people, stress is viewed as a negative concept as the body responds to changes in circumstances or a threatening situation and it gets worse when a person is not able to cope with the situation at hand.

Things that stress us encourage us to either adjust or change some aspects of our behavior and failure to make changes in our behavior, we find ourselves experiencing some unpleasant side effects or signs and symptoms. Some relational side effects include isolation, resentment, loneliness, lashing out, hiding, sexual problems, distrust, less contact with friends, as well as lack of intimacy. At the moment, the COVID-19 pandemic has disrupted the mental health process across the globe due to its devastating effects. People are facing increased levels of alcohol and drug use, insomnia, and anxiety. Those who are vulnerable stand at a higher risk of severe health outcomes. Bereavement, isolation, loss of income, moreover, fear has led to mental health disruptions. Fear of getting sick disrupts population activity. Furthermore, the increase in deaths leads to worries in the communities due to misinformation, stress, and emotional confusion that can lead to out-of-control behaviors.

Get plenty of rest and sleep

Rest rejuvenates the body and mind. Rest also improves mood, the immune system function, memory, and reduces stress level.

Exercise relieves stress and muscle tension.  On the other hand, it can reduce anxiety, depression, and it distracts us from stressors.

Plan for Change

Preparing for change can reduce the shock of finding yourself in a different situation. A person can prepare ahead of time for any changes.

Make the most out of your time and invest in the future

Many people have lost their jobs or have lost their source of income, therefore, learn to work efficiently by utilizing realistic time while investing in the future

Avoid negative self-talk and negative attitudes

Always engage in positive self-talk and encourage yourself rather than becoming negative. Do not fight the inevitable but accept what you cannot change

In conclusion, always seek assistance if things are getting out of hand. Most of the time our bodies can handle stress but we should not underestimate its impact. Therefore, when you fail to cope with stress seek assistance to help reduce the level of stress to an appropriate level.
